Job Description
POSITION: Executive Director, Kitsap County Historical Society
REPORTS TO: Board of Directors
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will serve as the chief executive officer of Kitsap

 County Historical Society, with primary responsibility for managing the organization’s day-to-day activities and operations, leading the organization’s fundraising activities, directing and coordinating the work of staff, consultants, and volunteers, and serving as the primary spokesperson for the organization. The Kitsap County Historical Society seeks an entrepreneurial leader and a communicator who is able to convey effectively Kitsap County Historical Society’s mission and activities to a number of constituencies.

The Executive Director will ensure that the organization is fiscally and programmatically sound, adheres to AAM standards of exhibition and collection ethics and that its programs are meeting the needs and interests of its constituents.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

·        Assuring quality, effectiveness, and impact of the Kitsap County Historical Society’s programs;

·        Establishing and maintaining museum policies as they pertain to its mission and as guardian of Kitsap heritage entrusted to the museum through its collections;

·        With the Board and staff, leading the Kitsap County Historical Society in setting overall direction and priorities, and developing and implementing programmatic and organizational strategies, policies, and goals;

·        With the Operations Manager, leading the organization’s financial management; ensuring that sound financial policies and controls are in place and that funds are spent wisely;developing budgets and reporting standards; working with staff and Board to maintain the organization’s financial well-being;

·        Leading the organization’s administrative management; ensuring that sound operational, administrative, and human resources policies and controls are in place; ensuring through effective supervision that day-to-day operations and programs are professionally and efficiently organized and administered; working with Board and staff to maintain the organization’s administrative well-being;

·        In partnership with Board, staff, and consultants, establishing and implementing fundraising goals; using staff, consultant, and Board member talent, resources, and ideas to enhance fundraising activities; enhancing Board member ability to identify fundraising opportunities; and encouraging their ongoing participation as donors and solicitors;

·        Working with Board, staff, and consultants to identify and cultivate individual, foundation, and corporate donors and expand donor base; researching and writing grant proposals, annual solicitations, and other fundraising initiatives; developing and maintaining relationships with donors, volunteers, and community organizations; securing in-kind corporate and individual contributions; developing opportunities to raise the organization’s profile;

      ·      Ensuring internal communication and coordination among staff and consultants; evaluating staff’s and consultants’ 
         performance, and recruiting new staff and consultants when appropriate;     
      ·     Ensuring an ongoing public presence for the museum through marketing, public speaking, and other public   
          communiques such as the KCHS Newsletter, local newspapers, historical column, etc.);

·        Keeping the Board informed of status of operational goals and of program, staff, consultants, or funding developments; regularly briefing the Board on the status of the organization; remaining actively in touch with and well-informed about the Board’s activities; and providing information to help the Board formulate effective policies.
