Curator Job Description

The Kitsap County Historical Society and Museum in Bremerton, Washington, invites applications for the part-time position of Curator.  Salary: $15-$20 hours DOE.  Hours: 20 hours per week/ 52 weeks per year.

The Curator will oversee the management of the collections, the exhibits, and related activities of accessions. The collection is of Washington State historical significance with specific focus on Kitsap County.

The successful candidate must be a good communicator and possess good writing and organizational skills. Familiarity with Past Perfect software is required.

Education and experience: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Museum Studies, American History, anthropology, or other discipline related to the objectives and mission of the Museum, preferably supplemented by graduate-level study. Strong organizational skills and responsible curatorial experience are essential. Experience may be substituted for education, if appropriate.

Primary responsibilities of the Curator will include:
·   Preservation of, and acquisitions to, the collections.
·   Developing and implementing exhibits.
·   Maintaining appropriate records.
·   Organizing and updating current collections
·   Seeking funding/sponsorships for exhibits and collections management
·   Supervising curatorial interns and volunteers.
·   Executing the job in accordance with professional museum standards.
·   Using Past Perfect to develop and maintain the collections database.
·        Maintaining a good working relationship with KCHS members, staff, donors and the public
The Kitsap County Historical Museum is a small, active museum focused on the collection, preservation and exhibition of the diverse culture, heritage, and history of Kitsap County, Washington. Formed in 1948 by dedicated volunteers, it has grown into a professional institution, located in downtown Bremerton near the center of the arts district.

The Museum is open daily, Tues. through Sat., 10-5, and offers exhibits, research opportunities and scheduled tours.  Its Archives are open by appointment and are used by a varied group of researchers, including authors, students, government personnel, local citizens, and tribal groups.

Recent educational programs have highlighted the photography of Edward Curtis and Asahel Curtis, the old Poulsbo fishing fleets, pioneer dance music of the lumber camps, art and culture of the Northwest tribes, the Mosquito Fleet, and the exploration of Puget Sound.  The Society's Historic Sites Committee maintains the Kitsap County Register of Historic Places.
