The Kitsap County Historical Society serves as a gathering point for the entire community
of organizations dedicated to researching and preserving the history of Western Puget Sound.
We have requested summaries of the various Puget Sound organizations noted here
and will add new entries and details for each as that information becomes available.

Museums.
•Bainbridge Island Historical Society and Museum
The rich and stored past of one of Puget Sound's most famous regions is chronicled here. The new museum encompasses a research library permanent and rotating exhibits, will a growing collection of cultural and historical photographs and artifacts Open 1 to 4 pm Wednesdays through Sundays. Closed on major holidays.
•Des Moines
The purposes of the Des Moines Historical Society include the discovery, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge about the history of the greater Des Moines area of Southern King County, State of Washington
•Freemont
The Fremont Historical Society is dedicated to building awareness and appreciation of the history of a unique and early Seattle neighborhood. FHS enriches the community through education in the areas of cultural, political and social history. Through research, documentation, display and promotion, FHS encourages scholarship and accessibility to materials and research which tell the story of the Fremont neighborhood.
•Jefferson County
The Jefferson County Historical Society is an incorporated, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in the downtown historic district of Port Townsend. Since 1951, the JCHS Museum has welcomed visitors to the landmark City Hall building at 540 Water Street.
•Lakewood
Located in Lakewood’s historic Colonial Center and opened in October, 2006, this local History Museum brings to life area history from its prehistoric past to the present time through displays of artifacts, photos, maps, documents, and memorabilia.
•Monroe
The Monroe Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization that was founded in 1976 and opened its Museum in 1982 in Monroe's original two-story City Hall building at 207 East Main Street where it is still located on the ground floor. As well as a wide-ranging collection of local historical artifacts, the Society maintains a variety of local history resources available with some restrictions, to members and to the public
•Puget Sound Maritime
The mission of the Puget Sound Maritime Society is to collect, preserve and display of objects, relics and data of maritime interest, with special emphasis on the history of the Pacific Northwest maritime activities.
•Tacoma
The Tacoma Historical Society began to take shape as early as 1989, but was formally established and incorporated in 1990. The Washington State Historical Society was planning to build a new facility on Pacific Ave. Tacoma historians and history buffs, realizing that Tacoma-centric artifacts would not figure prominently in plans for the new museum, formed the Society out of the need for a repository that would help Tacoma tell its story to visitors and future generations
•Center for Wooden Boats
The Center for Wooden Boats is a hands on maritime museum. Its purpose is to preserve our rich, vital and varied small craft heritage by preserving both the artifacts and the time-tested maritime skills. The aim is to provide an educational adventure, through participation, in our small craft heritage.
•Coast Guard Museum, Northwest
Research resources include over three thousand books and periodicals covering Coast Guard and Northwest maritime history, plus twenty five hundred historical documents, clippings and vessel plans as well as fifteen thousand photographs dating back into the 19th century. The red-hulled icebreakers Polar Star, Polar Sea, and Healy are home-ported here, as well as the 378' high-endurance patrol cutters Mellon and Midgett.
•Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum
The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is a private non-profit museum maintained and operated by the Ilwaco Heritage Foundation, in Ilwaco, Washington. The museum is supported by a membership program, private and public contributions, admission fees and a variety of community activities. The Museum Bookstore and Gift Shop offers a compelling variety of historical and cultural books, maps and items that are sure to give you a lasting connection to Ilwaco's heritage and your visits to the Museum and the area.

•Keyport Naval Undersea Museum
Officially known as the Naval Undersea Museum, this facility includes the largest collection of undersea artifacts in the United States, including submarines, mines, and other displays. A wonderful experience for Navy buffs and individuals interested in the sea.
•Nordic Heritage Museum
The Nordic Heritage Museum is in a 1907 red brick school building that was originally Daniel Webster Elementary School. Located in Ballard, the heart of Seattle’s Scandinavian community, Webster School educated generations of Scandinavian and other immigrant children who came to this region, including many of our own volunteers. Webster School closed in 1979 due to a sharp decline in student enrollment throughout Seattle. The Nordic Heritage Museum opened in this building in 1980
•Northwest Maritime Center & Wooden Boat Foundation
To quote Jim Whittaker, internationally renowned sailor and mountaineer, “The Northwest Maritime Center is an adventure – a link between past and present – offering new generations an opportunity to explore the mystery and magic of the sea.” It is located in Port Townsend
•Port Orchard Log Cabin Museum. The Log Cabin Museum is owned and operated by the Sidney Museum and Arts Association, (SMAA), a group of people dedicated to the preservation of the history and artifacts of the South Kitsap area. The museum currently houses changing exhibits of home life in the South Kitsap area during the past 100 years
•Suquamish Museum and Cultural Center. In 1983, the Suquamish Museum was the second Native American Museum to open in Washington State.  The origin of the Suquamish Museum came about earlier, however, in 1977, when the Suquamish Tribe created the Suquamish Tribal Cultural Center, a non-project organization dedicated to the reconstruction and preservation of the history of the Suquamish Tribe.
•Washington State History Museum
The Washington State Historical Society collects material associated with the human history of Washington State and is located in Tacoma. The collections include many different kinds of artifacts, among them are tools, clothing, machines, furniture, artwork, toys, household items, and American Indian artifacts. We also hold an extensive archival collection of photographs, manuscripts, maps, ephemera, and publications.

Puget Sound Genealogical Society
PSGS features one of the most extensive libraries in Washington State in their compact and well-organized office in
East Port Orchard. The volunteer staff is helpful and available to assist with ancestral research. Collections include many specialized texts and reference books, including school records, land platts, and business records.
